Sustainable transport is also referred to as Green Transport at times. In this form of transport, there is no dependence on Limited natural resources. Instead, it uses energy that is renewable or regenerated. As a result, there is a very low or limited effect on the environment. A few examples of sustainable transport are cycling, walking and sailing.
Very little consideration was given to sustainable means of transport. No compensation was given to use of clean fuels. In fact, in many of the developing nations, the use of clean energy or fuel is still missing, and as a result, the level of pollution is still quite high.
As per an estimate, the different types of transport that are in use around the world consume almost 20 to 25 per cent of the world’s energy. The effect is the release of a high level of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the air. In 2018, it was estimated that almost 1 billion vehicles are being used all over the world. It is predicted that if the same trend continues, it travelling that by the end of 2035, there would be around 2 million cars plying on the roads worldwide. Presently, most of the vehicles use petroleum-based fuel, and people have started worrying about oil supplies in the future. This has led to the need to look for ways and methods to save fuel and also reduce pollution.
Given below are a few ideas for efficient use of transport:-
Use of Public Transport
Rail Travel –
As per the International Energy Agency, travelling by rail whether within the city or to cover long distances releases the least GHG in the air. An article published in Forbes indicated that the modern railway is the most efficient of all. The report further stated that trains are far efficient than Prius cars. Thus, the train is not only practical, but it is also great when it comes to intercity transport.
It too happens to be among the most environmentally friendly ways to travel. Buses travel at almost the same speed as cars. On top, the cost of transporting people is significantly reduced since many people go together without any loss of time. According to a report by IEA, buses use fuel slight more than trains in terms of fuel consumption. However, that should be a reason to avoid it. Getting into a coach is to increase transport efficiency.
In case trains or buses are available, these must be preferred over air travel. Planes might transport within a short period, however, these are also among the most fuel-intensive mode of travel.
Since these are relatively lightweight, these happen to efficient as well. In terms of fuel consumption, they rank almost the same as buses. However, the added advantage is personal travel.
Hybrid or Electric Vehicles
These impact the environment the least and is the way to the future. The emission is the least along with energy use. These would not only revolutionize the transport system but also revamp the concept of mobility altogether.
